Natural Toxins in Brazilian Unconventional Food Plants: Uses and Safety

Composed of various native and non-native plants, the Brazilian flora in its biodiversity remains a potential food source. In this context, plant species known Brazil as unconventional plants (UFP) deserve to be highlighted. Moreover, information concerning safety consuming UFP their natural toxins is still scarce. Thus, we explore current literature (2010–2020) obtain on toxicity, toxins, undesirable effects associated with 14 UFP. The following databases were used during research: Scielo, Embrapa Agricultural Research Databases, Web Science, Medline, PubMed (via National Library Medicine), Scopus. We screened 561 articles, 39 articles selected for analysis. vitro, vivo, ethnobotanical studies included. When considering edible parts Araucaria angustifolia (Bertol.) Kuntze, Sterculia striata A. St.-Hil. & Naudin, Hymenaea courbaril L., Platonia insignis Mart. presented no toxicity reports. Bixa orellana Spondias mombin Genipa americana Byrsonima crassifolia (L.) Kunth, Caryocar brasiliense Cambess low toxicity. Studies have revealed that consumption Solanum paniculatum Portulaca oleracea Mauritia flexuosa L. f., Pereskia aculeata Mill., Psidium cattleianum Sabine caution due such steroidal glycoalkaloids, saponins, flavonoids, oxalic acid, indole alkaloids. This chapter will contribute guarantee safe consumption, help minimize undesired complications, provide more complete knowledge toxins.
